The year 2007 is called the 'Visit Pakistan Year'. Nature, however, seems to be against us as rainstorms and floods have hit most parts of the country leaving thousands homeless and in desperate need of assistance. The Lal Masjid issue has overshadowed the devastation in the areas and the nation sits glued to their televisions regarding the crisis. The United Nations has deployed a five member assistance team to assess the situation in the flood hit areas, according to John Homes, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator. The greatest danger lies in the growing probability of an epidemic outbreak. According to sources, the top priority goods in need in the areas include tents, blankets and emergency medical kits but above all of water purification tablets. These tablets are known as 'Puritabs' are available at most local chemists. Besides these medicines, according to the Daily Times, more than forty victims of snake bites have been reported in Baluchistan, and the government is also making arrangements for anti-venom vials for the areas.

The army has deployed more than 15,000 troops for the affected areas. International aid is also on its way as the relief commission continues to assess the extent of the disaster. Average citizens of the country in safe areas need to step up and help in whatever manner they can. The magnitude of the disaster is not yet getting through to the peoples of major cities who continue to remain ignorant of the issue and go on with their daily activities.

The irony of the matter lies in that 'Visit Pakistan Year' is not for tourists alone but international relief teams as well as philanthropic citizens across the country trying to make a difference.

It will be a 2 night / 3 day trip with departure at 8 a.m. on Saturday, the 27th of January 2007, travelling staight to the base of Andahar Mountain (height - 4,000 ft) and setting up camp there for both nights. The second day we'll 4wheel up the mountain, have lunch there, then return back to camp for the night. Return scheduled for the Monday, Jan 29th.

This trip offers some great off roading opportunities along with some dramatic scenery. Keeping in view the costs associated with organizing the entire trip which includes food, cooks, helpers, the camp staff, etc....there is a cost per vehicle should you wish to participate. The cost ranges between Rs. 5,000/- to Rs. 10,000/- per vehicle (vehicle = two persons), depending upon the number of participants.

If you wish to participate, please email us along with details regarding the number of vehicles in your group, number of people intending to go on the trip and the type of vehicle that you shall be driving along with your contact details. The last date to submit your details is the 20th of January, 2007. Submitting a request does not guarantee entry as many things have to be taken into consideration, especially the fact that the vehicle you intend to drive on the trip is road worthy and not liable to break down during the trip as there will be no mechanical help available for miles.

Hope to see you all there. You can see pictures of the last trip to the area here.

Food, security, logistics, guides etc are arranged for. Besides that, here is the basics of what you'll need:

4×4 vehicle in good mechanical condition

Camping equipment, basically tents & sleeping bags

Personal saman (it will be cold, so jackets etc.)

Drinking water for your party for three days

thats about it

Item 1 on the list is the toughest, but items 2-5 can be arranged for if you don't have those.

The object of the "Dureji Expedition" is to drive through various within the jurisdiction of Dureji Tehsil. The route consists mainly of Shingle tracks which are primarily used by camels and infrequently by vehicles, thereby providing ample opportunity for drivers to test their skill. The Expedition also aims at traveling in a group to ensure that problems faced by any particular member with respect to vehicle breakdown, etc., can be jointly dealt with and resolved, removing the fear of being stuck in some remote valley with no help. Rest assured, we will all be there.

The Expedition is scheduled to depart from Karachi on the 17th of November, 2006 from Defence Phase V and shall consist of 3 traveling days and 2 night stays. The area we shall be driving through is located just North - North East of the Hub Dam which is visible on Google Earth next to Karachi.

The Top 10 Rockcrawlers of all time

66-77 Ford Bronco
70-80 International Scout II
55-81 Jeep CJ-5
76-86 Jeep CJ7
87-95 Jeep Wrangler
85-95 Suzuki Samarui
63-82 Toyota FJ-40 Land Cruiser
79-86 Toyota Pickup
Any Willys Flatfender

The editorial by the editor, Pewe: Any Willys Flatfender

Flatfenders are the best rockcrawlers ever. Period. That's not to say that other rigs aren't any good, but only the flatties stay true to the heritage of the sport. They were crawling long before any other model was even conceived, much less in training pants. The original Jeeps are small, nimble, light weight, have a good power-to-weight ratio, and feature flexible frames and compliant suspension. This allowed them to cross the Rubicon en masse before a V-8 conversion was even thought of. The low center of gravity, even when sprung over, gives great stability, and the fold-down windsheild and lack of doors make flatfenders the best-looking rigs ever made. Machine art at its finest.

But wait, there's more! They were originally painted green but can be changed to any color you want! They are also the most modifiable rig of all- unless you want a pure bolt-on-gizmo buildup, which gives rise to the phrase "Real Jeeps are built, not bought". As long as the class style is retained, the mechanicals and add-ons are fair game for conversions into whatever combination one can think of, and we've seen some weird ones. Even if you want a dead-stock flattie, almost any part is available - even if the local parts store just laughs at you.

Anzio Ferrari once described these tough little beasts as America's only true sports car, and they can still be found behind barns and in garages for as little as $500.

The list contains 4 Jeeps in it. That says it all. The Willys flatfender is so capable off road that even a completely beat up old hunk-a-rust still out offroads any new 4×4 built today.

The clutch plate had slipped, I restored it again & beauty is back on the road." It was truly, deeply stuck, as the pictures below show:

For those who weren't there, I took this picture last Sunday, 21st May, out in Phase VIII, only about a half a km from where Karachi's aspiring rally drivers were launching their 4×4s into the criss-crossing offroad trails in the empty plot that will be the venue for next Sunday's rally, supposedly the first of its kind in Karachi.

A multitude of Land Cruisers, Patrols, Pajero Evolutions, Wranglers, Jimneys and various other 4×4s had come out to get a feel of the place, running up and down the trails and trying not to run into each other. Meanwhile, this 2005 Hummer H2 was at the other end of the still unpaved road milling about a couple of dunes. Apparently, the big boy didn't want to play with the all the other leaner and meaner machines out there.

Back at the rally point, someone in the crowd that had assembled there suddenly drew attention to the lone Hummer stranded away on the distance churning up angry showers of sand this way, then that way. A few minutes later, with the Hummer well and truly stuck, the sand stopped flying and the occupants came out wondering in amazement as to how the unstoppable had become mired in the lowly sand of Phase VIII. As other vehicles passed by one by one, a few began making the detour to take in this rare sight. Taimur Mirza was then heading towards the rally point himself in his Jeep CJ7 when this small gathering, with the haplessly high centred Hummer as its crown jewel, caught his eye. Being the Good Samaritan that he is, TM stopped to see if he could lend a helping hand, or in this case, as it would be, a helping winch. No stranger to pulling such rescues out in the Phase VIII area, TM is considered by many an avid offroader to be their guardian angel.

First, TM hooked up a tow strap to the mired Hummer and tried pulling it out, but its heft just proved too much for the Jeep, itself no lightweight. Realising that trying this again would only make the Jeep dig in too, TM broke out the big guns - the 12,000 lbs rated Toyota winch gracing the front bumper of the Jeep. Of course, since this also required that the Jeep be pulling back as well, lest the winch drag the Jeep right up to the Hummer's rear bumper, Dr. Mansur assumed driving duties while TM waited outside with the winch controller in hand. Ready or not, the winch proved just far too much for even the Hummer and yanked it right out.

But wait, our story doesn't end here (just a little longer now)... the Big Boy's pride was obviously hurt. How dare a lowly sand dune put up such resistance to the Big Bad Granddaddy of all offroad machines? So the Big Boy backed up a few feet and lunged again head first into the exact spot from where he'd been pulled out moments earlier. As one can imagine, the result was no different this time, but he was able to back out under his own power. Then he went back at it with a longer run up. Finally, all 6.0 litres of V8 fury came out clawing and biting at the sand, throwing all 6400 lbs of the beast right through the dune rather than over it. As if to add insult to injury, in the Hummer's wake was Omar Salim in a beat-up, fresh-off-the-auction-block CJ7 with nothing more than a raspy sounding 2.8 litre 4 cylinder diesel, which ambled up and scooted right over the same dune without much drama at all, not once BUT TWICE!!

There are a few Jeep workshops in Karachi who do world class restoration work. I had known that many of their jeeps from Karachi end up abroad, with one great example in the Smithsonian Museum in the World War II section, and another in the New York Museum of Arts. Recently I found out that there was even a documentary made by an American channel about the local jeep rebuilders:

Hello!!

Great website....

A few years ago I watched an American program on tv about someone in Liyari who restores 4 by 4's.....

He has buyers all over the world...In that speciifc program a represetative of Willys was visiting from either UK or USA for an inspection. He spent 2 days on the restored Willys to find out if every part is authentic.......and was satisfied.........

I would really like to meet this man in Liyari who restores these 4 by 4's with such precision.....Can you help please??

Thanks
Sumair Abro

That person was most likely Dawood, who restored many jeeps which went abroad, but he passed away a few years ago. His son is still carrying on tradition at the same workshop. Salman Ali replied to Sumai:

Dear Sumair,

There were only two people in Lyari who restored military model Jeeps to their original condition, Dawood and Shafi. The latter is still alive and now has more of a supervisory and advisory role in his workshop, as he is quite old. The former passed away a few years ago, but his works can still be seen in the Smithsonian Museum.

His sons are still there in Lyari, but they have a long way to go before they even get close to Dawood's quality and workmanship.

There is another mechanic in Lyari, his name is Aslam aka Long-haired Aslam. He is a Rastafarain, and one of the up and coming restoration artists there.

Currently, your best bet would be either Shafi or Long-haired Aslam.

Regards,

Salman Ali

These workshops are famous enough that anyone in Lyari should be able to direct you to them. The best way to get there is to take a local taxi or rickshaw.

Now, the real question is how to get hold of that documentary! Sumair, if you read this, please post the channel/program you saw this on. (he left a wrong email address)
